Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) combines the transformative effects of ketamine with psychotherapy in a safe, supportive setting. At Awaken Mind Wellness, we use low-dose intramuscular ketamine to help temporarily quiet rigid thought patterns, increase neuroplasticity, and allow access to non-ordinary states of consciousness. These states often provide clarity, emotional insight, or relief from distressing symptoms, especially for individuals facing treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, anxiety, or existential distress.

2. Do you accept insurance?

We are currently in network with Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, there is an additional $100 per ketamine session as this portion is not covered by insurance.

For out-of-network clients, the cost includes:

  • Initial evaluation: $200
  • Each ketamine session: $350
  • Recommended series of 6 sessions: Total cost = $2,300

Payment is due at the time of service. We can provide a superbill upon request for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

3. Do you accept HSA or FSA cards?

Yes, we accept Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for payment.

4. Do you offer Spravato treatment?

No, we do not offer Spravato. At Awaken Mind Wellness, we work with a compounding pharmacy to customize intramuscular ketamine doses for each individual. This route offers better bioavailability and allows for more personalized care.

5. How is the ketamine administered?

Ketamine is administered via an intramuscular injection, typically into the deltoid (shoulder) or gluteal (hip) muscle.

6. What should I bring to my ketamine sessions?

  • A ride to and from your appointment (you cannot drive yourself afterward)
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Avoid food for 4 hours and clear liquids for 2 hours before your appointment
  • Sessions last approximately 75 to 120 minutes

7. What is a ketamine session like?

Each session begins with a review of your medical status and vital signs. You’ll have the option to set an intention before receiving ketamine. Once administered, you’ll wear an eye mask and headphones with curated relaxing music. The ketamine experience typically lasts about 45 minutes, during which you may enter a meditative, dream-like, or introspective state. Your provider remains present throughout the session to ensure safety and offer support.

8. Do you work with any pharmaceutical reps?

No. We do not work with pharmaceutical representatives. Our focus is on independent, evidence-informed care, not industry influence.

9. What is Quantum Neuro Reset Therapy (QNRT)?

Quantum Neuro Reset Therapy (QNRT) is a neuroscience-based modality designed to identify and reset emotional and neurological imbalances that stem from past trauma or stress. By targeting the brain-body connection, QNRT helps release stored emotional patterns, supports nervous system regulation, and promotes lasting mental wellness. QNRT is not talk therapy. It is a structured, non-invasive approach that facilitates internal recalibration and healing.

10. What is the best way to contact you? Who do we contact if there is an emergency?

The best way to reach us is by email: awaken@awakenmindwellness.com

Awaken Mind Wellness is not available for crisis intervention or emergency care. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please use one of the following resources:

  • Mobile Crisis in Polk County (available 24/7): Call 855-581-8111
  • Broadlawns Crisis Observation Center: 1801 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, IA — Open 24/7
  • National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
  • Your nearest Emergency Department or call 911 if you are in immediate danger

11. Why aren’t ketamine-assisted therapy and QNRT covered by insurance?

Insurance covers what’s easy to bill, not what actually heals. These therapies focus on root causes and long-term transformation, which don’t fit into the system’s short-term, symptom-based model. It’s not about what works best. It’s about billing codes and standardization.

12. What’s next?

Our vision includes offering psilocybin and MDMA-assisted therapy once they receive FDA approval. Both Cassidy and Kelly are completing advanced training through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute. We’re committed to building a trusted network of local healers in the Des Moines area to make these cutting-edge therapies accessible to our community.
